Estonian spring is beautiful but unpredictable. Temperatures can swing from near-freezing mornings to pleasant 15°C afternoons within the same week. Here’s what I tell every traveler who asks me what to bring.
Layering is Everything
The golden rule for spring in Tallinn: dress in layers you can add or remove throughout the day. Mornings can be chilly (2–5°C in March, 8–12°C in May), but by afternoon the sun can make it feel much warmer, especially when sheltered from the wind in the Old Town’s narrow streets.
A Good Waterproof Jacket
Spring rain in Tallinn is frequent but rarely heavy. A lightweight, breathable waterproof jacket is more useful than an umbrella, especially since the cobblestone streets and sea winds make umbrellas impractical. Look for something packable that fits in a day bag.
Comfortable Walking Shoes
This cannot be overstated. Tallinn’s Old Town is built on centuries-old cobblestones that are beautiful but uneven. Sneakers or low hiking shoes with good ankle support and waterproof soles are ideal. Leave the heels and thin-soled shoes at home.
Sun Protection
By late April and May, Tallinn enjoys long daylight hours (up to 18 hours by late May). The sun can be surprisingly strong, especially when reflected off limestone walls. Bring sunglasses and a light SPF moisturizer.
